How Is This Role Important to Our Work?

Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) is a process that provides a robust and holistic top-down view of key risks facing an organization. It enables boards and management to understand the critical elements of enterprise risks when making key business decisions in pursuit of the organizations strategic plan. The ERM Director is responsible for the leadership, innovation, and strategic development of the corporate Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) process to identify, evaluate and monitor the organizations risks. This role supports the execution and further development of the organizations ERM program and provides key information to executive leadership and the Audit Committee/Board of Trustees to support their oversight of the enterprise risk management process. This role also supports the organization's Own Risk and Solvency Assessment (ORSA). The ERM Program Director exhibits business process knowledge, possesses a broad-based operational perspective and provides solutions for business risk issues.

A Day in the Life:
  • Design, implement, and coordinate the enterprise-wide risk management framework and process for the organization. This includes assisting with the ongoing development and implementation of the enterprise risk universe, profile, and the organization's risk appetite statements.

  • Lead and coordinate the annual processes to support the organizations Own Risk and Solvency Assessment (ORSA). This primarily includes responsibility for completing and collaborating with various business areas to complete the report.

  • Collaborate with management in developing mitigation plans to manage high priority risks as well as to establish, communicate, and enforce the organization's risk appetite statements, thereby creating accountability for risks within the business. Work with management to integrate risk management techniques into the organization's strategic and operational processes and monitor and report on risk response plan actions put in place by management to mitigate identified risks.

  • Guide and assist executive leadership in the identification, evaluation, understanding, management, and communication of significant business risks. Provide clarity and focus through cross-functional collaboration in a matrixed organization for risk identification and risk response for strategic initiatives.

  • Clearly present and explain complex information in both verbal and written form to diverse audiences, including executive-level leadership and the Audit Committee. These responsibilities include the preparation and presentation of ERM updates to executive leadership, the Audit Committee, and the Board of Trustees.

  • Establish and maintain key relationships throughout the organization as a means of obtaining information needed to perform duties and provide audit and risk and related recommendations and corrective action plans as requested by senior leadership, the Audit Committee of the Board, or the state/federal government.

  • Participate in special project work groups and committees; and perform other duties as requested by VP of Audit and Compliance Officer and/or senior leadership.

Nice to Have:
  • Master's degree in business or related field.

  • Advanced knowledge of the health care and insurance industry, as well ERM methodologies.

  • Thorough understanding and knowledge of Blue Cross operations, products and systems.

Required Skills and Experiences:

  • Accepting this director level position at BCBSMN requires signing an Employee Confidentiality, Intellectual Property Assignment and Restrictive Covenants Agreement as a condition of employment.

  • 8+ years of related professional experience, with 3+ years of management experience, project lead, or team lead experience All relevant experience including work, education, transferable skills, and military experience will be considered.

  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Internal Auditor (CIA), Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE), Certification in Risk Management Assurance (CRMA), or related designation.

  • Experience in enterprise risk management, audit, project management or related experience, preferably with a large health plan.

  • Ability to influence leadership through clear presentation and communication of complex information.

  • Possess proficient knowledge of ERM principles and methodologies.

  • Strong organizational skills, problem resolution skills, project management skills, and the ability to adapt to a changing environment and work independently.

  • Excellent interpersonal and leadership qualities; ability to collaborate effectively using a broad range of influence styles to drive desired results.

  • Business expertise and interpersonal leadership skills to effectively work through sensitive and/or complex situations throughout the organization to influence change.

  • Ability to organize, lead, and motivate ad-hoc teams to drive toward completion of high-quality deliverables.
